MiMi’s STORY
I am MiMi Harris, a senior Exercise Science scholar athlete attending the unsinkable Albany State University in Georgia. This is my third year with the team and I chose the school for the opportunities and college major that will help prepare me for my future career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. I chose to play the sport of volleyball because growing up, I was involved in numerous sports and activities (volleyball, dance, cheer, gymnastics) and my mom told me I had to make a selection instead of playing all four sports. As a young girl, I wanted to be like my mom as she was a phenomenal athlete and Hall of Fame volleyball player. So I chose to focus on playing volleyball. My mom inspires me and I continue playing the sport I love because I know little black girls can believe their dreams are possible when they see me on the court. I’ve received many awards as a result of playing volleyball and they pertain to all-state academic honor roll, awards and acknowledgements for my character, sportsmanship, and conduct on the court. I have also received numerous awards for community service, leadership, and even won City of Phoenix Young Woman of the Year District 8. I have used those accolades to leverage my name outside of sports. I am excited to work with the Ultra Ankle family and build my brand as an athlete who is multifaceted and diverse with many talents and interests.
WHY ULTRA ANKLE?
I like the Ultra Ankle brace because it gives me the confidence to perform at my best without worrying about ankle injuries. Its comfort and stability make it easy to wear during practices and games, and I appreciate how Ultra Ankle does not restrict me from movement, while still offering strong support. Additionally, the Ultra Ankle brace has helped to prevent physical setbacks and stay consistent in my game, which is essential for any athlete. I would definitely recommend Ultra Ankle to others because it combines safety, promotes performance and gives me the confidence that I will not twist my ankle due to all of the jumping and awkward landings while playing volleyball. The Ultra Ankle brace and support is everything a player needs to keep competing at a high level.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT PLAYING FOR ALBANY STATE UNIVERSITY?
The best part about playing for ASU is representing a historic HBCU with pride and knowing I am a part of something bigger than myself. The support from the HBCU community, the bonds I have created with the entire department of athletics, and the opportunity to grow on and off the court have made my journey special. Every challenge I have faced has shaped me into a stronger athlete and individual, and I am grateful to attend an institution that allows me to be my authentic self and grow in many different ways. Plus, there is nothing like playing your favorite sport in front of an HBCU crowd. From the crowd chants to the hyped crowds during close games, the HBCU experience during athletic play really makes for a memorable game and season.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUNG PLAYERS IN YOUR SPORT?
The advice I would give to younger players is to embrace the process and trust your journey. Things may not always go as planned, but if you stay focused, keep working hard, and maintain a positive attitude, you will find growth in every situation. I would also suggest for younger players to protect their bodies, take care of their mental health, and remember that enjoying the game is just as important as winning. Stay patient, stay safe, and never lose sight of why you started playing when things are looking a little different than planned.
