Stirrup

Glenn Johnson

Restrict Ankle Inversion “turning”

It was nearly 100 years before the basic ankle brace improved, when Glen Johnson developed the stirrup ankle brace.

Johnson's design featured U-shaped, rigid supports which acted like splints that restrict the ankle's motion.Johnson’s design featured air bladders which helped to reduce swelling. The stirrup brace effectively helped prevent inversion, or "turning" injuries.
